For Malaika Ramachandran, the roots of her global mindset and love for cultural connection began early—at Silicon Valley International School (INTL), where she attended from Kindergarten through 8th Grade in the French Program.
"Having attended INTL from Kindergarten, the school's philosophies are so deeply woven into who I am that it's hard to separate them from my identity. I simply can't imagine my life without the diverse and international upbringing I experienced there. My connection to French culture remains strong—I was in Paris just recently over spring break and was delighted to find that, almost 20 years later, my French still comes back to me naturally. But INTL's influence extends far beyond language skills. It has given me a genuine appreciation for cultures around the world."
This early exposure to global perspectives set the tone for Malaika’s educational and professional journey. INTL instilled not only language proficiency but also a cultural empathy that continues to shape how she moves through the world.
Language Learning that Lingers
Malaika didn’t stop at French—INTL’s multilingual offerings allowed her to explore Spanish as well, an experience that would prove surprisingly relevant in her adult life.
"While I was in the French program full-time, I also took three years of Spanish with Monsieur Dulac in Middle School. What surprises me most is how frequently I find myself using my Spanish these days – perhaps because I've recently lived in both California and Texas, areas with vibrant Spanish-speaking communities. I'm genuinely amazed and grateful at how much of the language has stayed with me, considering I learned it as a third language and only during those Middle School years at INTL."
From the Bay Area to Texas, the ability to speak and understand Spanish has opened doors and helped her feel at home in new communities—further proof of INTL’s long-term impact.
Finding Her Calling in Human Resources
Malaika's early career in the startup world introduced her to the fast-paced environment of employee wellness benefits and sales. But it was the human side of business that captured her heart.
"While I discovered sales wasn't exactly my passion, these roles revealed something important – I had a genuine interest in the human resources and people-focused aspects of business. This realization led me to Purdue's Krannert School of Management, where I recently completed my first master's degree in Human Resources. I'm now excited to continue my education journey here, pursuing an MBA that will further develop my skills in the field I've grown to love."
Leadership and Impact at Purdue
Malaika’s academic life at Purdue has been full of both achievement and service.
"Currently, I'm living in West Lafayette, Indiana, as a master's student at Purdue's Krannert School of Management. I've just completed my first master's degree in human resources and am continuing my educational journey here. Beyond my studies, I've had the privilege of serving directly with the dean on the Academic Leadership Committee and representing the Daniels School of Business as a Delegate, as well as participating in various volunteer opportunities on campus and in the local community."
"I recently had the opportunity to represent Purdue at Ohio State's graduate-level HR Case competition in February, which was an incredible experience that allowed me to apply classroom knowledge to solve a real-world challenge."
Her drive to lead and grow is a reflection of the holistic approach to learning she experienced during her years at INTL.
Coming Home to INTL
Despite the physical distance, Malaika's bond with INTL remains deeply personal and emotional.
"I stopped by the INTL campus this past December and was immediately greeted by so many familiar faces that I found myself getting emotional — it truly felt like coming home. Getting to catch up with crowd favorites like Monsieur Monteil, Monsieur Cabanel, Monsieur Dulac, and Madame Merckling was just so lovely. There was something powerful about reconnecting with people who had watched me grow up and still knew me in such a deep and intimate way, even after all these years. This moment reminded me how INTL doesn't just educate students — it creates lasting bonds and a true sense of community that continues long after graduation."
Looking Forward with Purpose and Passion
As she pursues her MBA and looks ahead, Malaika is already planning how to make an impact—both professionally and personally.
"Looking to the future, I'm excited about completing my MBA at Purdue and combining it with my HR master's degree to make a meaningful impact in the field of work performance evaluation. My international education at INTL taught me the importance of considering diverse perspectives, which is essential when developing more equitable and effective performance systems that work across cultures and backgrounds."
"What I look forward to most in life is continuing to travel and connect with amazing people from around the world. My years at INTL gave me language skills, genuine cultural fluency, and curiosity that make these connections possible. Whether it's catching up with old friends in Paris or making new connections in places I've never been, the comfort with crossing borders – both geographical and cultural – is perhaps the most valuable gift from my international education, one I will continue to treasure and nurture throughout my life."
Malaika Ramachandran’s story is a powerful example of how an international education lays the groundwork for a life of purpose, adaptability, and connection. From INTL classrooms to global case competitions, from language lessons to leadership committees, she continues to carry the heart of her education into what she does.
