Local Chefs Teach Students about Gastronomy

Local Chefs Teach Students about Gastronomy

gas•tron•o•my (noun): the practice or art of choosing, cooking, and eating good food.

Chef Emmanuel Robert stopped by INTL* and spent time with Hayat's 1st grade class and Katia's 2nd grade class, bringing a varied range of flavors with him. The purpose of the workshop was to teach students about gastronomy, and asked students to identify tastes, discuss and name foods... all while spending quality time in the kitchen with a professionally trained chef. A wide array of food, from carrots to chocolate was offered - more details on the visit can be found on the Palo Alto Tasting Week Website.

Each year, students look forward to INTL's Taste Week - it's a way to incorporate good, healthy, delicious food into classroom activities. For example, students are blindfolded and asked to describe what they're tasting. This not only helps them to expand their palates, but their descriptive vocabulary as well!

Due to the unique nature of INTL's language immersion programs, Chef Robert taught both workshops in French! There were cornichons aplenty for students to enjoy!

While experimenting with food can be fun, the overall goal was to teach students about gastronomy - to expand their palates, their options, and their opinions about choosing food, preparing food, and eating food.
