Service, Culture, & Connection: INTL Students in Guatemala

At Silicon Valley International School (INTL), fostering globally minded citizens goes beyond the classroom. Through immersive experiences like the recent 9th and 10th Grade service trip to Guatemala, students gain firsthand insight into different cultures, engage in meaningful service work, and build lasting connections.

Partnering with Dream Volunteers, INTL students spent a week contributing to impactful projects while deepening their understanding of the region’s history, traditions, and community needs.

Working

A key component of the trip was the service work. Students assisted with ongoing construction at El Astillero, a school that will provide critical access to education for children in neighboring villages. Seeing the progress made over the past two years, including the foundational work laid by a previous group of INTL students, was both inspiring and humbling. Additionally, students engaged with local peers at Dream Volunteers’ collegio, participating in cultural activities, collaborative projects, and discussions that highlighted the importance of education and community development.

Students hiked the Pacaya volcano, explored the traditions of the local Mayan communities, and even took part in hands-on activities such as making tortillas and painting sculptures inspired by indigenous art. They also shared a field day with Guatemalan students, fostering friendships through games and team-building activities.

The trip concluded with a final round of service work, a visit to a local market, and a closing reflection session where students shared their biggest takeaways. Many expressed a newfound appreciation for cultural exchange and a commitment to making a difference in their own communities.

These service-learning opportunities are an integral part of INTL’s mission, providing students with real-world experiences that nurture empathy, responsibility, and leadership. The Guatemala trip was not just about service—it was about connection, perspective, and the lasting impact of global citizenship.
